Thermal Modelling Services

Technical knowledge of the glass conditioning process is provided by BH-F for
clients and technical partners alike as a unique Service allowing tailored advanced
glass conditioning solutions to be achieved, using a commercial
computational fluid dynamics package called Phoenics.

The capabilities of this CFD package.

  • Conduction heat transfer between solids and fluids in contact.
  • Radiation heat transfer at the boundaries and across cavities.
  • Natural and forced convection, and heat transfer within fluids.
  • Turbulent and laminar flows.
  • Cartesian and cylindrical polar fields.

We are able to predict flows and temperatures in working ends,
forehearths and feeder bowls with good precision, provided that the assumed
physical properties data of the participating media are sufficiently accurate.

To date we have carried out studies
on the following items in our product range:

  1. Tandem forehearths/feeders.
  2. Single and multiple exit working ends.
  3. Varying profile forehearth channels.
  4. Forehearth entry letter box and side drains.
  5. Forehearth bottom drains.
  6. Open and closed top forehearths.
  7. Forehearth cranks.
  8. Cooling entry and exit ducts.
  9. Feeder bowls with rotating tubes and paddles.
  10. Mass heat extractors.

Studies have been made of lines
for the production of:
  • Containers
  • Flat Glass
  • Fibre Glass
  • Tubing and Glass Bulbs
Using the properties of:

  • Soda Lime
  • Borosilicate
  • Lead Crystal
  • Barium Crystal
  • Various Colours

We also use CFD modelling to improve the design of products,
and also to develop new product lines.

To supplement this CFD work, we also have other mathematical routines,
which are used to calculate glass head losses, refractory heat losses
and interface temperatures, physical properties
from composition and various values related to the combustion of gases.
